To kick off the 150th Kentucky Derby, Kayla returned to her hometown of Louisville to perform live at Churchill Downs. With this year’s Gatsby-inspired theme, she proudly repped The Great Gatsby on Broadway, performing “Absolute Rose” from the broadway show.
In a whirlwind chain of events she couldn’t have scripted if she tried, Kayla was invited to sing the national anthem for the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards—just days after a viral interview unexpectedly linked her Broadway work to the team. Take a look here.

Kayla made her Broadway (and broadway pricipal!) debut in the Original Broadway Cast of Paradise Square, where she played Blessed and understudied Joaquina Kalukango in the Tony Award–winning lead role of Nelly. Paradise Square received 10 Tony nominations, including Best Musical.
Kayla spent a year and a half on the national tour of The Book of Mormon, starring as the Tony Award–winning lead role of Nabulungi.
Fun fact: The signature Senegalese twists worn by Nabulungis in productions today were inspired by Kayla’s own hairstyle when she joined the company!
Kayla was in the Original Broadway Cast of the 13-time Tony-nominated hit musical Some Like It Hot, where she served as a swing and understudy for every female character in the show. Kayla played the Leading role of Sugar Kane 86 times over the course of the show’s one-year run. Watch some like it hot’s Tony’s performance here.

A hairless cat named Paw McCatney. A shared love of Nickelback. A Tony Awards watch party. From that unexpected beginning to a hometown wedding surrounded by castmates and family, Kayla Pecchioni and Colin Barkell’s love story is anything but ordinary. “Everything naturally fell into place,” Pecchioni said in her interview with The New York Times. “That’s the theme of our whole relationship.”
Kayla took the stage at the second annual Broadway Forever concert, representing Some Like It Hot with a performance of “Darker Shade of Blue.” The Times Square event—hosted by NYC’s Office of the Mayor of Media and Entertainment—celebrated Broadway’s vibrance and featured fellow performers like Cheyenne Jackson, Jordan Fisher, and Charity Angél Dawson.
Kayla’s mother, Deedee Cummings, is a licensed therapist, attorney, and the author of Kayla: A Modern Day Princess—a five-part children’s book series inspired by her daughter’s real-life journey.
Her work uplifts young readers with stories of confidence, purpose, and mentorship, and continues to inspire Kayla in her own path as a performer and storyteller.
A headshot, a leotard, and a dream. Kayla starred as Maggie in A Chorus Line at Signature Theatre, bringing heart, voice, and sparkle to the show’s iconic “At the Ballet” belter.
